Sirius Radio
Sirius Radio was founded under the name of Satellite CD Radio Inc., and it was often called by its nickname the Dog Star, from the dog logo of the company. The name changed into Sirius Radio in 1999, and it remained unmodified ever since. The rapid changes in the communications field influenced the necessity to adapt to new public demands; this is how the Internet version of the radio came into being with world wide availability in 2006, and later on the merger with XM Radio took place in July 2008 putting an end to an older competition.
Sirius Radio is a satellite broadcasting service available in Canada and the United States. Sirius Radio has the main headquarters in New York but there are smaller studios in Memphis and Los Angeles too. With an only ten-year history on the market, Sirius Radio covers a very large range of entertainment options in its sixty nine music channels and sixty five news, sports and shows streams. The music channels play all sorts of genres and they broadcast twenty four hours a day without bothersome commercials interrupting the programs. One other advantage of Sirius Radio is that its channels and shows are not censored, and the audience has access to live non-mediated shows.
Following the same system encountered with premium satellite channels, Sirius Radio offers its users pay-per-service programs that are not interrupted by commercials. Thanks to the fees subscribers pay every month, there is no need for the company to contract advertising in order to keep the network profitable and running. The monthly subscription is $12.95, with the price increasing for every supplementary receiver. Sirius Radio also offers a prepaid lifetime option for nearly $500 that covers the equipment cost and the subscription too. Although not many users go for this alternative, there are some who find it very convenient in terms of money savings.
Howard 100, Howard 101, Sirius Hits, Octane and New Country are the Sirius Radio channels most listened too. Moreover, the broadcaster also increased the audience level by using exclusive deals with famous people in the showbiz that include names like Martha Stewart, Eminem, Steven Van Zandt and lots of others. Such people contributed to the creation of branded music channels with the possibility to launch more special music programs. This is how two distinct Sirius Radio stations came into being: Underground Garage that deals exclusively with garage rock and Outlaw Country dedicated to all sorts of alternative country music types.
